Locally grown produce may become more accessible, thanks to an initiative by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Tenders for nine urban farming sites were launched by the SFE on 12 May 2020 .
Nine Rooftops to be Converted to Farming Spaces
Sembawang and Jurong West tendered out two cluster sites each, while the remaining five sites in Choa Chu Kang, Tampines, Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, and Hougang are being offered as single sites for urban farming.
Tenants of HDB multi-storey car park rooftops will be able to use the space for farming vegetables, packing, and storage. The rooftops are designed to save the cost of farming through efficient production scales.
Interested tenants may submit their proposals via online goverment procurement platform GeBiz before the tender closes at 4:00 pm on June 9. Proposals will be evaluated in accordance to bid price, production output, design, site layout, and business plan.
A Growing Need for Food Security
This new development is in line with SFA’s strategy to meet the nation’s goal of growing 30% of consumed produce locally by 2030.
As the recent COVID-19 pandemic reaffirmed the importance of food security, SFA hopes that the rooftop gardens will help locals appreciate the farming process and show greater support for buying local produce.
