What’s the difference between Fire Insurance and Home Contents Insurance?

Fire insurance required by HDB or the bank (with housing loans) covers only the structure, fixtures, and fittings that comprise part of the building. Claimed costs only cover the restoration of the flat’s physical structures and fixtures to its original condition. This does not cover renovations costs or your home contents. Home Contents Insurance covers your renovations, internal fixtures (e.g. air conditioning units), moveable contents (e.g. furniture and appliances), valuables, and legal liabilities that arise due to the insured events.

Under what circumstances can I make a claim using this free coverage?

The main perils covered against loss or damage to your home contents are:

Bursting or overflowing of water pipes or household apparatus

Earthquake & lightning

Explosion

Fire

Flood

Riot

Strike or civil commotion

Theft

Vehicle impact

How long is this plan valid for?

This is a one-year complimentary plan, and it is non-renewable. There will not be any incurring fees or a need to cancel should you decide to discontinue the plan after these 12 months.

Can I exchange it for cash instead?

No. The purpose of this free one-year coverage is to provide our customers with the opportunity to protect their homes.

If I have an existing Home Contents Insurance plan, can I still apply for this?

Unfortunately, no. You would only be able to claim under a single policy. In this case, Aviva can offer you a free Personal Accident plan instead.
