Aside from COVID-19, another public health concern is dengue. The National Environment Agency (NEA) stated that the total number of dengue cases in 2020 has exceeded 6,000 – more than double that over the same period in 2019.

  • The number of weekly dengue cases remains high, hovering between 300 and 400 cases per week.
  • As of 27 April 2020, there have been seven dengue fatalities. The cases were between 60 and 80 years of age, and all have resided or worked within dengue clusters.

Vector Control During the Circuit Breaker Period

Vector control efforts are classified as essential services during the circuit breaker period. The NEA is working with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) to ensure that pest control operators can continue with their critical vector control works.

NEA is embarking on stepped-up community action against dengue.

What are the Consequences of Having Mosquito Breeding Sites?

If your premises create conditions favourable for the propagation of vectors may be punished:

  • First-time offenders – A fine of up to S$5,000, or imprisonment of up to three months, or both.
  • Repeat offenders – A fine of up to S$10,000, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

For those issued orders under the Control of Vectors and Pesticides Act, failure to comply means:

  • First-time offenders- A fine of up to S$20,000, or a jail term of up to three months, or both.
  • Repeat offenders- A fine of up to S$50,000, or a jail term of six months, or both.

What Can Homeowners and Occupiers Do?

  1. Pay more attention to any mosquito breeding or adult mosquitoes present in your homes
  2. Take the necessary steps to prevent or remove these sites

Here are tips for a dengue-free home! Also, don’t forget to do regular house cleaning to help prevent the spread of both dengue and the coronavirus.
