Animal welfare organisations have seen up to a 10-fold increase in fostering and adoption requests.
- The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Singapore has seen a 10-fold increase in fostering queries since March.
- Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD) said that they have received double the usual number of adoption enquiries and six times the usual number of fostering enquiries.
- Causes for Animals Singapore (CAS) also seen a 50% rise in fostering queries as people look to take care of pets
Work-from-home arrangements and the need for companionship were some of the reasons for this surge.
Safe distancing rules have made it difficult for the adoption process to proceed.
Besides the need to be stringent with the adoption process, animal groups are unable to process adoption and fostering requests on account of a manpower shortage due to the circuit breaker measures.
Animal groups remind fosterers that aside from the time commitment, they also need to put in the effort to train their pet.
Last 2 March 2020, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has announced that HDB flat owners can now adopt bigger dogs under Project Adore, which has revised the size criteria for rehoming local mixed-breed canines. Dogs up to 55cm tall, with no weight limit, can be rehomed in HDB flats under this government scheme.
