While it goes without saying that the year 2020 was one of the most challenging if not most dreadful, 2021 is unquestionably the year many are yearning to recover and bounce back. As mentioned by local Feng Shui expert Marites Allen during an interview with CNN Philippines, “because there were a lot of stresses brought by 2020, we have to take care of our body and mind. It is always important that we create peace and harmony in an environment as well.”

In terms of the Chinese Zodiac, 2021 is the year of the Metal Ox, and will indeed be a time for emotional, spiritual as well as economical reconstruction. While in no way does this guarantee what will happen in the next lunar cycle, it won’t hurt to do everything we can to improve our fortunes, and since many of us will continue to spend most of our time at home for the foreseeable future, we might as well begin where we live or plan to move to.

Here are four tips that can help make our living spaces more auspicious for the coming months.

First, prepare the home

Whether the new year is Chinese, Gregorian, or any other, a common thing to do is clean up the home. In Feng Shui, the general belief is that clearing clutter helps improve the flow of energy, and the tidier the home, the easier it is to rearrange and redecorate (or in some cases, renovate) and make more auspicious for the year.

Once your living space has been prepared, it is time to determine which parts of the home are deemed ‘lucky’ and ‘unlucky’. Take a compass and identify which sides are facing the north, south, east, and west.

Avoid ‘bad luck’

According to local astrologer and Feng Shui master Hanz Cua, the unlucky sectors of the home for 2021 are the north, northwest, southwest, and southeast. Given the global issue that is Covid-19, he suggests those who are pregnant or have weak health to not sleep with their headboard facing the north, as it is the ‘illness star’.

The northwest star on the other hand is what invites robbery, cheating, and betrayal, so he recommends keeping the parts of the home that are in this section to be well-lit and possibly secured with alarms and CCTVs.

The southwest is where quarrel and conflict are most attracted, while the southeast is the ‘worst star’ as it can bring misfortune all around, be it health, career, and relationships. Cua suggests activity in these sections be kept to a minimum.

Invite good fortune

As there is bad luck, then there is also good fortune that can supposedly be invited into the home in 2021. According to Cua, this can be done best in the east, northeast, and west, sections of the home, as well as the center.

The east, as Cua explained on his official social media page, is the ‘love and study luck sector’. Couples looking at homes for sale in the Philippines might want to consider properties with bedrooms facing the east to help further strengthen their relationships, while parents setting up their children for online learning might want them situated in that same area of the home.

The northeast, on the other hand, supposedly faces the accomplishment or long term success star. This might be the ideal place of the home to focus on health and fitness so that well-being can be obtained for the ‘long-term’

The west, according to Cua, is the money, prosperity, and business star; and is a good place to invite career luck. Given how many have been relegated to working from home, this section may be ideal for setting up a home office or area to do work on an online business.

Center on family

The center of the home is also believed to be a section of the home that is ‘lucky’ when kept clean and well lit and having an atmosphere of happiness. Seeing as the family is the ‘center’ of most homes, one might as well keep them the focus of it, be it when redecorating or renovating to better invite good fortune, making improvements for more practical reasons, or buying a new home outright.

Whether it’s a house and lot or a condo unit, one must always keep in mind to purchase and/or set-up a home that is enjoyable to live in, particularly now that the majority of the time is being spent here. As much as it is believed that it can be rearranged and decorated to invite good fortune and at the same time ward off negative energy, the home is defined by its occupants and making it one centered on the well-being of the family is what will make it a worthy investment.
