Hari Raya is almost here and there’s much to do before it arrives! We all know the struggle that is juggling house chores on top of finding the perfect first-day outfit, braving the crowds at bustling Ramadan bazaars and beautifying the home in time for Raya. If you haven’t started preparing your home for the festive celebration, don’t start scrambling yet – there’s still time to get your abode ready and looking it’s very best for the big day. Here’s a list of tips to get you on the right track.

1. Start de-cluttering

Hari Raya is a day where homes fill with huge gatherings of our family and friends to feast guilt-free on lontong and enjoy each other’s company. To maximise space and show off your home in its best light, it’s always best to do a thorough decluttering. Start with getting rid of items that have piled up and remain largely forgotten such as clothes that have not been worn in a while. Other types of clutter to dispose/ donate to relevant charities could also be old toys, kitchen utensils, toiletries, and shoes.

2. Deep clean your home

Spring cleaning is an essential task to prepare your home for the upcoming festive occasion. Get your home looking immaculate by paying more attention to areas in the home that would normally be overlooked during the everyday tidy-up. Give the windows and mirrors a proper wide-down, vacuum the dust bunnies under and behind bulky furniture and be sure to comb through every nook and cranny with a duster to ensure no stone left unturned – this applies to dust magnets like the blades of a ceiling fan and window blinds.

3. Paint your walls

Want an instant makeover without shelling out big bucks? This may be a no-brainer but giving your walls a fresh coat of paint does wonders to refresh the look and feel of your home. Painting could be a drag for those of us who are fasting but the outcome, and more importantly the feeling of seeing your home sparkle with that new-paint glow makes all that effort worthwhile.

4. Throw in new curtains, cushions, and rugs

Getting your home Raya-ready isn’t just about making your home spotless. Not ready to let go of your current furniture? Spice up your home in a blink of an eye by swapping out the old cushion covers with brand new ones. Stick to a colour palette for other textiles so that the curtains, carpets and table runners can all tie in together cohesively.

5. Hang festive lights

Like the figurative icing on the cake, no home is ever truly Raya-ready without hanging the colourful fairy lights so synonymous with the joyful occasion. Let your neighbours know that your home is undeniably ready to welcome the festive celebration by installing the lights outside your living room or balcony window for a spectacular display.

With these tips, your home will be shining, shimmering, splendid in time for the exciting celebration to start. All there’s left to do is to blast your favourite Hari Raya playlist and whip up mouth-watering Hari Raya food staples such as ketupat, rendang, and sambal goreng. But until then, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!
